Martin Swayne

Martin Swayne was the pen name of Scottish physician and psychiatrist Maurice Nicoll. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I, using his pseudonym to write about his wartime experiences. A direct colleague of Carl Jung, Nicoll ran a successful London practice before leaving medicine in 1922 to study esoteric philosophy under G.I. Gurdjieff and P.D. Ouspensky. His lecture notes were later compiled into the monumental five-volume Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky.
